Douglas S. Sheaffer, 72, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Friday, June 9, at home with his family in Mantua, Ohio. Doug dearly loved his wife of 41 years, Judy, and daughters Jenna and Leah, as well as numerous pets lucky to be a part of his world. Doug was born August 10, 1950, in Cleveland to Lewis S. and Elizabeth (Bette) Sheaffer. An avid outdoorsman, Doug enjoyed fishing and hunting, and studied forestry in college. After Hurricane Katrina, Doug, who was certified in water management, was a member of the FEMA cleanup teams in New Orleans. Doug was a 1968 graduate of Hudson High School and a longtime employee of Geauga Lake. He and Judy also were volunteers with Freedom Greyhound Rescue. They opened their home to many fosters and adopted several greyhounds. Doug is survived by his wife Judy; daughters Jenna Sheaffer and Dr. Leah Sheaffer (Dr. Russ Sakacs); brother Kevin (Jill); sisters Liz Sheaffer and Mary Lou (Chuck) Mondo; and 16nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Donations in Doug’s memory may be made to Freedom Greyhound Rescue or Portage Animal Protective League.

Just found out that Doug died. I’ve known him since 1969 when he started work at Geauga Lake. Doug & my dad became very close friends. Wow still in shock.
