Ocie Lee Mangle

Ocie Lee Mangle was born in Salem, AL, September 25, 1937 and passed on November 23, 2024.  He was the son of the late to Roosevelt Mangum and Johngelena Edwards. Johngelena moved her children, Ocie and Roosevelt Jerry Mangle, to Cleveland, OH in 1945 where she had secured employment.

Ocie attended Quincy Elementary School and then Thomas Edison Jr. and Sr. High School on 71st and Hough. In the 9th grade, he played guard on Edison’s basketball team. Ocie dropped out after the 11th grade to pursue a career in the U. S. Marine Corp. This decision enabled him to assist his mother in caring for the family. 

Upon entering the Marine Corp., on January 13, 1956, he was presented with the Presidential Citation Award. In 1957, Ocie played baseball (3rd base) in the Marine Corp. In 1958, his Fleet, the First Battalion Six Fleet Marines, was deployed to the Mediterranean. He returned to Cleveland, OH March 18, 1960, with an honorable discharge.

 In 1960, Ocie worked at the Colonial Hotel as a Houseman. In 1974, he became gainfully employed at Pro-Seal Manufacturer as a labor worker. When Pro-Seal went out of business in 1979, He moved to Birmingham, AL with his brother Clark; he married Annie Edmonds. They joined and attended Bethel Baptist Church where Ocie was baptized. He was employed with the Brown & Ferris Industrial Company in Birmingham, AL until his retirement in 1999.

After retirement, he became active with the Smithfield Association Board which focuses on neighborhood and community improvements. During the holidays, this board reaches out to children in the community with gifts and assistance to their families. The Board also serves meals to Senior Citizens.

Family preceding him in death: Roosevelt Mangum (Father), Johngelena Edwards (Mother), Roosevelt Jerry Mangle (Brother), Clark Todd (Brother), Maggie Nelson (2nd Mother), Juanita Mangle (Niece), and Evelyn Edwards (Aunt).

Those still on earth honoring his memory are his Niece, Irma R. McQueen; Great Niece, Nicole Mangle; Great Nephew, Jaylen Mangle; Cousin, Ocie Jeanette Triplett; Cousin, Larry Edwards; and Cousin, Hartford Edwards (Maude). GOD children Johnathan & Jasmine Carter, Monique Macon, and Iyanna Macon. Special life-friends: Aaron Martin, Frank Monnigan, Daryle & Sharron Foxx, Rashida Thomas, Denise Lewis, and Dorothy Whye.

A Memorial Gathering will be held December 13,2024 at the YURCH FUNERAL HOME, 5618 Broadview Road, Parma, OH  44134; where family and friends will be greeted at 11:00 am till 11:30 am.
