Rex Albert Gilbert, of Westlake, OH passed away after a brief illness with his family by his side on Friday, January 6th, 2023. He was brought into this world by Ada Gilbert (née Southworth, deceased) in Corry, PA. Rex is survived by his beautiful wife Barbara of 37 years. Rex raised 7 children through 2 marriages during his time with us. He leaves behind David (Linda), Carolena (Mike), Theresa (George), Anthony (Greg), Nancy, Brian (Adrienne), and Brandon (Leah). Rex also had 11 grandchildren: Jason, Christina, Daniel, Gina, Nathan, Matthew, Mariah, Aubriella, Austin, Audrianna and Lauren, and 4 great grandchildren: Kobe, Morgan, Hattie, and Truman.
Rex was raised on a farm in Corry, PA for the first few years of his life, when his family moved to Cleveland to look for work at the steel mills. Rex was a graduate of West Technical High School in Cleveland. He then volunteered to join the Army where he was a Corporal in a logistics unit. He was stationed in Japan, along with doing a tour in Korea during the Korean War. He returned to Cleveland and worked for a couple different trucking companies, primarily as a warehouse supervisor until he retired from John Klan Trucking. He married Catherine Varvaro (deceased) with whom he had five children. Later, he married Barbara Seeger with whom he had two children.
Family was Rex’s life, and volunteering his time at the American Legion Post 91 in Berea in the Color Guard and also Commander. Rex always enjoyed cooking, doing handywork, yardwork, and a good BBQ.
Rex will be interred at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, OH in June of this year with military honors. His family will be hosting a Celebration of Life on July 1st with a time and location to be determined. All are welcomed and asked to RSVP to his son, Brian.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in his name to Hospice of the Western Reserve or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Barb..just heard about Rex..the best to you and the family..we lost a good man and Post 91 lost one of the pillars of the 80’s reorganization…keep those memories.
To Barb and Family. I am sorry for the loss of your, Husband, Father and Grandfather. His voice will be in your memories in the stories he told, the memories of your many family events and the great meals he prepared.
Your hearts will be heavy in the days and months to come but as you gather and your conversations include all the great memories of Rex, he will be there to make you smile and feel his love!

Shelly, I found his recipe. He wrote it down for me. We will find out Memorial Day weekend. I want to keep the cookouts going whether at my house or one of the boys.
